Brief description:

Istanbul University is a state university, founded in 1900 and reorganized in its present form in 1933. Istanbul University comprises two medical faculties, Istanbul and Cerrahpasa. Istanbul Medical Faculty, with its 497 teaching staffs and nearly 2,500 students is the Turkey’s oldest and biggest Medical School. The campus is located in the European side of the city, named Capa, and is composed of three main departments of basic medical science, internal medicine, and surgery. The campus contains 70 outpatient and inpatient clinics with a capacity for 2,000 beds.

Istanbul University Medical Faculty’s Endocrinology and Metabolism Division is renowned worldwide for its medical excellence and research. It is the biggest and one of the most famous tertiary referral centres for several diseases in endocrinology.

 

Main tasks attributed:

The close collaboration with SGK (Sosyal Guvenlik Kurumu; Social Security Institution) and with SEMT (The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey) Diabetes Study Group, The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Istanbul Medical Faculty enables the development of clinical practice guidelines for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diabetes and its complications, setting the referral issues. SGK is the main health care provider in Turkey, ruled by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance. SGK involves with the networking of health care providers and reimbursement issue at the level of primary care, ambulatory care and hospital care for 73 million inhabitants in Turkey. The outpatient population is about 15,000 patients (nearly 15% with type 1, and the remaining majority with type 2 diabetes).
